#22. Creativity Scavenger Hunt
For this fun process, youâll first need to set a dollar budget. Rosemary suggests $25 to $50, although even $10 will work. Next, take yourself on a creativity scavenger hunt to your local art supply or hobby store. (Michaelâs Arts and Crafts and Hobby Lobby are two chain stores in most communities. Your town or city may have locally owned and operated arts and crafts stores, as well.)
Wander the aisles and see what grabs your attention. Stay within your stated budget; if itâs only $10, you can certainly pick up a big box of crayons and perhaps some inexpensive watercolors or colored pencils. For $50, you can get a good inventory of supplies. Rosemary, who now creates beautiful art, says that she was so stifled in her creative expression that she bought a paint-by-numbers kit!
If your creativity is more inspired by motion, go to an athletic store and see what you can find that will help you get and stay unblocked. A jump rope? Hula hoop? Medicine ball? Yoga mat? Stretch bands?
When youâre back home again, write about what you bought and how it feels to have taken yourself on an âartistâs dateâ (Cameron 1992).
â from Rosemaryâs journal
Artistâs dates are what I need . . . time to meet, welcome, and embrace the inner artist I have lost sight of. I love office supply stores, always have . . . clean white paper, unlimited shapes and sizes of notebooks, pens of every color, and now even with scents.
And I love art stores even more than bookstores. I love the idea of possibilities. Possibilities of unlocking the potential within, of having an evening here and there to create, or a project to start and finish, and of the prospect of spending some time in my stifled right brain.
Where to start? My attention is drawn all over the store. Fresh paints, watercolor palettes with moist, tropical colors, brushes of so many sizes and widths I wouldnât know where to begin! I decide to look at some books to activate my brain.
I end up with a book with doodles that need to be finished and a drawing book with activities to improve my sketching skills. That way I can doodle when I have time, add color, and at least have a starting place. My creative brain is so unused it has forgotten how to get started. The drawing book has pages to practice after a lesson, so I can rebuild forgotten skills. I feel like a young child with two presents waiting to be opened. Let the unwrapping begin!
